What is Dhanteras?

Dhanteras is the first day of the Diwali festival. It is also known as Dhantrayodashi. Dhanteras tithi falls on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha or dark fortnight in the month of Kartik. This day is considered as very auspicious to worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera for wealth and prosperity. Dhanteras has another significance too, it is also observed as the birth anniversary of Lord Dhanvantari.

Dhanteras: Historical significance and why it is celebrated

Dhanteras, as mentioned earlier, is the Subharambh of  Diwali celebrations and is observed on the Trayodashi or 13th Tithi of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month. Indian Prachin scriptures tell a story behind it! On this day Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the Milky Sea).

This day is therefore very auspicious for the devotees to pray for wealth and prosperity to Maa Lakshmi and Lord Kubera. Dhanteras holds its own special spiritual and cultural value.

Dhanteras Rituals

  • Lakshmi & Kubera Puja: Dhanteras puja is performed to please Lakshmi and Kuber wishing for wealth, prosperity, and happiness.
  • Yamadeep Daan: Yama deep means lighting of a lamp outside the house in the evening, dedicated to Lord Yama. It is done to prevent untimely death in the family.
  • Dhanwantari Jayanti: Dhanteras is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Dhanvantari. He is the God of Ayurveda, who emerged from the Samudra Manthan with the nectar of immortality.

Dhanteras Celebrations

Cleaning and decoration of homes

  • People begin preparations days before Dhanteras. They start with cleaning their homes, shops, and living places. It not only removes dirt and dust, but also prepares us for a new beginning.
  • On the day of Dhanteras, houses are decorated with rangolis, flowers, and diyas.
  • The entrance is decorated with mango leaves and torans to welcome Goddess Lakshmi.

Dhanteras puja

  • The main ritual of the evening is Lakshmi Puja during Pradosh Kaal. This year in 2025, it is from 07:16 PM to 08:20 PM.
  • Idols or pictures of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhan Kubera are worshiped.
  • Puja is performed with flowers, kumkum and haldi. Devotees offer sweets, fruits, and dry fruits in front of the deities.
  • Devotees chant Lakshmi mantras and Kubera stotras during the puja.

Yamadeep daan

  • After Puja, a small earthen lamp filled with mustard oil is lit and placed outside the house. It is kept near the main entrance or in the backyard.
  • This ritual is believed to remove any mishaps or untimely death in the family.

Dhanvantari Jayanti

  • Dhanteras is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Dhanvantari. He is the divine physician of Ayurveda.
  • Dhanvantari is worshiped for disease-free health and overall wellness.

  • It is considered highly auspicious to buy gold, silver, or utensils on the day of Dhanteras.
