What is Ginger?
Ginger is a spice used in a wide range of cooking worldwide. It comes from the underground stem of Zingiber officinale. It can be consumed as fresh, dry, powdered, or juiced.
This spice adds a peppery flavor to food and drinks. Ginger’s therapeutic benefits have long been recognized. It helps with digestion, reduces nausea, and fights cold symptoms. It is used in traditional medicine and as a spice ingredient in many cuisines.
How is Ginger cultivated?
Ginger grows from hardy rhizomes rather than seeds. The sturdy, disease-free rhizomes are chosen first to plant. It needs warm weather and well-drained soil to grow. Ginger is planted as soon as the monsoon season or the onset of rains occurs. The rhizome pieces are planted in rows and covered with loose soil.
In order to keep the plants healthy, weeds are often pulled. After about 8 months, ginger is ready to be harvested. The rhizomes are finally cleaned of the dirt before salling in the marketplaces.
