What is Star Anise?
Star anise is a spice that looks like a star and has eight pointed pods. Each pod contains a glossy brown seed. It comes from the evergreen tree Illicium verum.
It grows well in warm and subtropical areas of China, Vietnam, and India. Farmers harvest star anise fruits right before they ripen, then sun-dry them for use in kitchens and in medicine.
Star anise has a strong, sweet, and licorice-like flavor. It is commonly used to treat illness, digestive issues, and other general health ailments.
How is Star Anise cultivated?
Star anise flourishes in subtropical climates. In India, it mainly grows in the northeastern Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh and in the southern state of Kerala predominantly. It grows best in deep, loamy soil that drains well but requires a lot of water.
The trees are planted with tree cuttings and seeds. They begin to bear fruits after 6 to 7 years. The star anise fruits are picked just before they are fully ripe.
It is then sun-dried to get reddish-brown fruits with rich flavour. Proper drying ensures rich flavor and longer storage. With proper handling, mold can be prevented, guaranteeing that the spice is safe for use in both medicinal and cookery.
