From North to South, you will get different meanings. But all stories meet one point, i.e., it is the victory of good over evil.

Here are some legends about Dussehra/Vijayadashami:

Durgapuja is observed with great enthu in West Bengal. They consider Durga Maa as their daughter. Bengalis call Maa Durga as ‘Uma’. Like how a married daughter comes to her parents’s house, Durga Maa also comes to her father’s home with her sons and daughters together. She lives here for four days and goes back again to her husband’s place.

Northern India has a different story behind it. This is related to Lord Rama, according to Ramayana, Lord Rama, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu wom over evil king Ravan. When Lord Rama was on his way to fight with Ravan, he worshipped Goddess Durga seeking her blessing. Eventually, he won.

According to ancient texts, Goddess Durga was the cause to free the entire heaven and earth from the tyranny of Demon Mahishasura. By deceit, Mahisura had one blessing no male can kill him ever. So, he used to think that he was immortal as no female has the courage and ability to do so. After finding no way out, God created Durga to kill Mahisura.

Also Read: Diwali 2024: Puja Timings, Rituals, Dates & Celebrations

Dussehra/Vijaya Dashami: Tradition and Rituals

Vijayadashami, or Dussehra is celebrated differently in different parts of our country. Delhi, Mysore, Varanasi, Kullu, and Kolkata- all these cities are famous for celebrating this festival with great joy. In certain locations, people participate in public processions, and in Ram Leela. The Ravan Dahan custom is also very famous and spread over multiple cities.

One most crucial parts of the celebration is the breaking of firecrackers. In addition, people start to perform the entire Ramayana beginning 10 days before the Dussehra festival. In 2025, the Dussehra/Vijayadashami will be observed in the same manner. Here are some rituals of Dussehra for your quick check:

Ramlila performances: Ramleela or Ramlila is a dramatic play that uses drama, acting, and dancing to convey the story of Lord Rama. Here, people or kids play the entire life story of Prabhu Ram.

Ravana Dahan: On the eve of Dussehra, people gather in a place and burn the effigy of Ravan. It stands for the triumph of good over evil.

Durga Aaradhana: Hindus in India celebrate Durga Puja in remembrance of the goddess and her victory over the terrifying demon Mahishasura. In Bengal, Durga puja is more famous for their meaning. They carry out various rituals and customs throughout five days. In 2025, Durga Pooja will take place from 28 September 2025 (Sunday) to 2 October 2025(Thursday), culminating in Vijaya Dashami (Durga Visarjan)

Worshiping Weapons: As we all know, Durga Maa vanquished the demon on this day, this day is also known as Shastra Pooja and Ayudha Pooja. The Gods praised her weapons when she won. On the day of the Vijayadashami festival, people worship their weapons and pay homage to the goddess.

Dussehra 2025 Celebrations

On Dussehra, people in Northern India celebrate the victory of good over evil by doing a very famous custom – the Ravan Dahan. Also, people wear new clothes and host large celebrations together. In some parts of India, you will get to see the Ram Lila show. This depicts the life story of Rama, how Sita Maa was caught by Ravan, and how Prabhu Ram brought her back. Then, in public spaces all around the nation, the effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakaran, and his son Meghanada are set on fire.

People in the Eastern region of India, which includes West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha, celebrate this day known as the end of Durga Puja. Bengali people observe this day as Vijaya Dashami. Usually, Bengali women wear red sarees and play with vermilion.
