Sawan Somwar marks the onset of the holy month of Sawan or Shravan dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is a month long time to dip in devotion and spiritual journey for Shiva devotees. In 2025, the sacred month of Sawan begins on July 11 and ends on August 9. During this period, Mondays hold special importance, as devotees observe fasts, visit Shiva temples, and perform rituals with utmost faith to receive Lord Shiva’s divine blessings.
Sawan Somwar 2025: History and Significance
Sawan Somvar is the name given to Mondays that fall in the holy month of Sawan. These days are highly auspicious for praying to Lord Shiva and getting his blessings.
The story of Sawan Somvar begins with Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the ocean. In this manthan, Gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) joined forces to churn the ocean of milk to obtain Amrit, the nectar of immortality. Many divine objects emerged from the ocean, including Kamadhenu (wish-fulfilling cow), Airavata (elephant), Lakshmi (goddess of wealth), and Halahala (deadly poison).
When the poison surfaced, it threatened to destroy all life. Lord Shiva drank the poison to save the universe, and his throat turned blue. This is the reason he is also known by the name of Neelkanth.
After he ingested the poison, Lord Shiva’s devotees and the gods prayed passionately and offered him water to soothe him. This dedication of Shiva is remembered at the Sawan Somvar fast and puja. Sawan Somvar vrats are said to improve people’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
People observe vegetarianism, fast on Mondays, and offer sincere prayers during this period. In observance of Lord Shiva, they abstain from dangerous activities, meat consumption, and alcohol consumption. This is supposed to purify the mind and body.
